Recovery
happens when a series of choices are made by an individual who
has become motivated to change. For the gambling or substance
addict, recovery begins with the decision to reduce harm to themselves
and to their loved ones.
Harm reduction means strategically manipulating outside situations,
circumstances or persons with whom we have contact, in order
to minimize the impact that compulsive gambling can have on an
individual. Harm reduction is not the answer nor a cure but it
can help in the case of compulsive gambling to minimize financial
and emotional damage. It can also help lead to a compulsive gambler
becoming motivated to want to quit altogether. So the choice
to come to the Integrity Recovery House is in fact this first
step. By choosing to live here, the guest is saying "I am
taking myself out of harms way so I can focus". All sorts
of resources become available that were previously unknown when
an individual makes this choice and takes this first step. This
first step is called "talking the talk".
To abstain from gambling, substance abuse, or behaviors which
are addictive is to choose to take the first step. Abstinence
from these behaviors represents an early commitment to working
toward a new way of living, being, and looking at life. This
second step is called "walking the talk".
This next step is the one that takes a while to cultivate.
It is to choose recovery over the disease as a way of life. The
choice of recovering has many inherent facets, including the
honest acknowledgment of being powerless and accepting a higher
power. Recovery is a deep and profound commitment much like obtaining
remission for a medical issue. It is the result of a deep commitment
for staying with treatment through its course, and then living
healthy every day for the rest of life. This is called "walking
the walk".
Though these three chosen steps may sound clear, they are
seldom smooth. Rather, they happen in a series of fits and starts.
Much of the learning necessary takes place during these fits
and starts.
This is why doing this work in a community that provides structure
is so important so as to not lose focus. There are many falls
in the process of recovery where the helping hands of staff and
or another guest help us learn how to pick ourselves up again.
Counseling Services at Compulsive Gambling Treatment Clinic
Our philosophy holds that individuals who are dependent on
substances or gambling have lost their integrity and vary in
their insight about this. Also varied is their skill and motivation
to address their dependence issues. While honoring the uniqueness
of each individual as an integral part of nature, we provide
an environment and an opportunity for our clients to regain a
meaningful sense of integrity. By focusing on body, mind, and
spirit, fostering integrity and providing lots of support, our
clients gain a steady sense of wellness and overall resiliency.
